As sisters, we love giving back to both the Emerson, and local Boston communities, and love finding fun and successful ways to do so. We have annual philanthropic efforts, such as the Making Strides For Breast Cancer walk every fall. But we are always looking to do even more every semester.
Ugandan Jewelry Sale
Project Have Hope is a non-profit organization that seeks to empower women in the Acholi Quarter of Uganda by providing education to both the women and their children and assisting the women to establish business opportunities to promote economic stability and sustainability. Project Have Hope works with a group of 100 women and helps them transform their lives and the lives of their families. Through the sale of their beautiful, handmade paper bead jewelry, the women can feed their families, send their children to school, and look forward to a richer future. This event is always a favorite among the sisters and makes for great holiday gifts when we sell them at the end of first semester!
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
We participate annually in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in the fall. We walk in honor and memory of all women who have fought the battle against breast cancer, but especially for our affected sisters. The five mile walk around the Charles River is always a fun time for the sisters and the alumni! It is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about steps we can take to reduce our risk of getting breast cancer, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society.
The sisters are proud to have raised over $600 for Making Strides this year! We walked the full 5 miles on October 15 through the misty weather all towards the cause. Congratulations to all of the sisters who came and walked and a thank you to everyone who donated and participated in our fundraising events!
Keep a look out for fundraising events for next fall!
Relay For Life
Relay for Life is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk. Members of each team takes turns walking the track and participating in fun events for this great cause. Each year, Sigma raises hundreds of dollars to fight cancer and make a difference in people's lives. Just as the logo states, Sigma hopes to "celebrate, remember, and fight back" against this deadly disease.
This year Sigma participated with members from all of Emerson's Greek Life as a unified Emerson Greek Life team to close out Greek Week.
